Make the Most of Holiday Moments...

Come dance off a few last minute calories, work off some last minute stress, escape before the onslaught of family and in-laws, and come celebrate the joy of the season one last time with us!

This time of year, it is so easy to get caught up in the chaos that is MISTAKEN for Christmas. Christmas is not about battling long lines, desperate attempts to find a particular item, or marathon shopping sessions. Christmas is about joy & people! Christmas is about being in a place (or places) that make you feel good and fill your soul. Christmas is spending time with people who care about you and your life. Christmas is about taking a moment (or two!) to lose yourself in the one you love, or just simply a beautiful environment.

So, tonight when you are debating whether or not to make your way back out to Carolina Place... don't! Pack up your dancing shoes and come out and spend some time truly celebrating the season with us! It is a decision we are sure you won't regret! Material gifts are always available, but MOMENTS are fleeting. Make the most of the last few holiday moments this year...

How to Grow as a Dancer Over Christmas Break!

DanceSport Carolina will be closed for holiday vacation beginning Friday, December 23; and re-opening again for the new year on Tuesday, January 4 (with the Southern Paradise Ball - Ballroom and Latin Dance Competition less than 4months away!). While we all appreciate the time to step back and enjoy time with our families and friends (and trays of delicious sugar cookies!), as dancers, a week and a half is a LOONG time to be away from the floor!

When it comes to practicing, it is important to remember that practice doesn't necessarily make perfect, it just makes permanent! What you are practicing has to be correct! There are quite a few things you can do to keep your feet (and body!) in shape over Christmas break, starting with your final week of classes. Use your final private lesson with your teacher to take notes and video what you have been working on. Ask them to video themselves marking through the figures, routines, and technique exercises that you have been working on. That video will allow you to literally "bring your dance teacher home with you" over your break! You might not have to skip your weekly private dance lesson after all! Robert, Bradley, Tony or any of our staff can give you a review/practice session right in your living room!

In addition to practicing, time off give you a chance to set goals for yourself for the coming year! Think about what you have done, the dance events you have attended, and progress you have made this past year and write-out a goal plan for yourself for 2011. Be specific! You will be your teacher's favorite student for sure if you come back from break with a list of goals to tackle and accomplish in the new year!

In addition to being physical process and journey, dancing is a mental and emotional journey as well! Vacation gives you a chance to pull out photos, competition/showcase videos, lesson/practice videos, even costumes from the past and appreciate the incredible journey you have taken. Seeing what you have done will both light an incredible fire and passion inside of you for the coming year, but will fill you with a wonderful(and well deserved!) sense of pride and accomplishment for all you have accomplished. Don't forget non-dance photos from both before and after DSC! Notice a few inches missing from your waist? Wearing a bit more mascara and lip gloss these days or dressing with a bit more pizazz? Standing a bit taller? It's incredible! Learning to dance is a life-changing experience with each and every step and you want to enjoy every moment. Use an hour that would normally be one of your private or group dance lessons and make a scrapbook of your journey!

If you spend the holiday break practicing your dancing, setting goals for the new year, and celebrating the journey you've taken and dancer you have become, not only will you grow as a ballroom and latin dancer, but you will return to DSC with the same excitement, passion, and FIRE that we are all sure to return with! Until then...

Merry Christmas! Any may God bless you with a year of love, laughter, and DANCING!

"Dancing in a Winter Wonderland"

DanceSport Carolina's 2010 Holiday Showcase & Ball: "Dancing in a Winter Wonderland" was a night of celebration and joy for DSC students and teachers alike. Held at Grand Central dinner theater in uptown Charlotte; students, their families, and friends, walked a paparazzi-infested red carpet to their five-course, sit-down dinner and professional show!

The show opened with DSC owner Elizabeth Malvasia and her student dancing a dedication to our country's men and women in uniform. As stated by Elizabeth in the show's opening remarks: "these men and women give us all the ultimate gift each and every day: our freedom". The opening number was followed by exhibition after exhibition of powerful, energetic, and passionate dancing! While spectators enjoyed the show from VIP booths and formal dining room seating, standing ovations were abundant!
At the night's conclusion, gracious accolaids could be heard resonating the elegant setting as dancers and spectators commended the incredible show and luxe accomodations. One dancer, no stranger to what is standard in the ballroom industry for showcases, was blown away by DSC's overwhelmingly professional show and venue. It was truly a magical night for all who attended!
For more photos from our incredible evening, visit: www.dancinginawinterwonderland.com or www.facebook.com/dancesportcarolina
Up next on the DSC calendar is our annual "Big Band in the Big Easy" party: Saturday, February 26th! DSC students and pros dance the night away to a live swing band while dressed as flappers, gangsters, and other 1920's characters! More information and ticket availability coming soon!

Dancing Our Way into the Holiday...

The sights and sounds of Christmas are in the air here at DanceSport Carolina! And while we, like everyone, treasure the sounds of shoppers bustling and sugar cookies baking, OUR holiday sights and sounds are even more exciting! This time of year means our annual "Dancing in a Winter Wonderland" Holiday Showcase! For the staff and "veteran" dancers of DSC, this event is looked forward to from January 1st! Our studios are filled with the sounds of Showcase songs playing, routines being rehersed and perfected, and the very hearts and souls of our amateurs and pros being poured into each and every moment of preparation! Showcase is unlike any other event in that it is an opportunity to capture a student's (and teacher's!) unique personalities and incorporate other aspects of life and dancing into a performance. For the diverse and world-renowned group of pros on staff at DSC, this is a chance to share with their students (and a dinner theater full of spectators!) their varitey of gifts and talents that go beyond exquisite ballroom and latin abilities. From elaborate and unique costuming, to "Disney" caliber character and performing, our pros shine from the inside out, and guide their students to a new level of accomplishment.

Showcase is a black-tie affair! Here at DSC, we celebrate the holidays as they were intended to be celebrated: dressed to the nines and dancing the night away! Uptown Charlotte's most sought after theater is the stage on which our holiday show takes place! Stadium-style, lush seating, and a 4-course formal dinner are among the evening's highlights! We are uptown's most lavish holiday production!

Beyond being a lavish and exciting night for students and spectators alike, Showcase is an emotional event. As a studio, we never forget the blessing of being able to do what we love. We are all blessed with life and health, an outlet for our passion, and a community of people with which to share all three. God is so good to us each and every day of the year and our Holiday Showcase is a moment for each of us to be greatful for and truly celebrate this and the many blessings bestowed on our lives. Each year Thomas and Elizabeth select an organization or group on which to dedicate the year's show. In the past they have used the show as an opportunity to draw attention to and raise money for homeless children in Charlotte, and those in foster care. This year, the show will focus on our troops - past and present. They are chosing to remember, and hope everyone will join them, the families celebrating the holidays without their solider, and the soliders who have given and are willing to give their very lives for our country - the ULTIMATE Christmas gift.

For more information on our Holiday Showcase - "Dancing in a Winter Wonderland", please see your teacher, or take an information card from the front desk of either our Matthews or Lake Wylie studios. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

DSC Owner Selected as "Carolina Health & Fitness Magazine" December Cover Model!

We all know that dancing does a body, mind, and soul good! But soon, ALL of the greater Charlotte area will know that too! DanceSport Carolina owner (and inspiration to us all!), Elizabeth Malvasia, was selected as CAROLINA HEALTH & FITNESS MAGAZINE's holiday issue cover-model and "female fitness inspiration"! Elizabeth was chosen a the "epitome of what today's fitness-focused women are aspiring to be: healthy, fit, glowing, sucessful, and happy". Why is dancing the perfect exercise in Elizabeth's opinion? "It exercises your entire body, mind, and soul. It makes you stronger and healthier from the inside out".

During her shoot, the photographers and directors commented most on Elizabeth's "dancer legs" and exceptionally sunny demeamor. "It's like not only her body, but her SPIRIT is in perfect shape!" commented a crew-member. CH&F features editor described working with Elizabeth as "...an uplifting and overwhelming positive experience! She was more than willing to try anything we asked, and photographs long, gorgeous lines and a bright smile from any angle or position!" Elizabeth's thoughts on her role as a fitness inspiration? "I am not and have never been 'skinny'. I think women should put their focus on being healthy, fit, and HAPPY above a certain size or weight. People will forget your dress size, but they will never forget your smile and outlook on life. I am proud to represent these qualities for CH&F Magazine, and proud of my studio's role in creating opportunies to achieve these qualities for women throughout the Charlotte area!"

Exclusivity (And Why its Important!)

Ever wondered why DanceSport Carolina is "the Carolina's ONLY exclusive Ballroom and Latin Dance Studio", and why such pride is taken in that fact? For both students new to DSC, wondering what all the fuss is about, and for our veterans who maybe never quite got it either, here's why being part of an exclusive dance studio is the way to be!

1. Curriculum- Many of you have by now have come to realize that your lessons are more than just an hour (or more!) per week of fun and exercise. Your teacher is diligently moving you through a curriculum that GUARANTEES you developing into the dancer you (and your partner) have always dreamed of! Much like a mom hides vegetables in delicious and seemingly unhealthy snacks, your teacher uses their skill, experience, and renowned (and DanceSport Carolina exclusive!) training to seamlessly weave this more serious and intense instruction into the fun and energetic lessons that you enjoy weekly!

2. Accountability- Not only is your teacher responsible for your curriculum and dance plan, but each and every curriculum devised by the instructors is reviewed and approved by one of our studios's dance directors and gone over with the ENTIRE STAFF in DSC's weekly staff meetings. That means while you are paying for one instructor, you actually have an entire STAFF of people committed to and passionate about your time and learning experience here at DSC! Ever wonder why when you walk through the door of one of DSC's studios the entire staff greets you as if they know you personally? Because they feel like they do!

3. Training- DSC owners Thomas and Elizabeth remain as committed to what happens on their floor as they were when they were the ones teaching! Each and every professional hired, regardless of their past dance experience, must complete a month long, INTENSIVE training program and pass a two-hour, standardized teaching exam. Upon completion, all staff must log a certain number of hours per week in dance training, paid for by DanceSport Carolina. The staff is tested throughout the year on the various syllabus from which they are teaching. DSC takes very seriously the knowledge that being a good DANCER and being a good TEACHER are two different skills and invests tremendous amounts of time and money to makes sure their staff is the absolute best of both! Sure, there are a lot cheaper and less time consuming ways to staff a studio, but they just wouldn't cut it for DSC's high standards!

4. Environment- DanceSport Carolina is more than just a business, or even just a studio. It is a dance home to a one-of-a-kind dance family. It is important that each and every person feels comfortable and secure in their time spent at a DSC studio. You will never attend one of DanceSport Carolina's group classes and have people who are not learning the same curriculum as you holding up your learning. You will never take a class that doesn't perfectly compliment your private lessons. You will never come into contact with a student whose heart (or attitude!) is not in the proper place, nor a teacher who dedication, commitment, and spirit is not on par with that of the studio as a whole. DSC takes great pride in being the ONLY studio to have ever denied admittance or continuation to a student! What business owners are willing to put integrity, morality, and decorum over money.....Thomas and Elizabeth! And they will continue to do so in their never-ending effort to make DanceSport Carolina the highest caliber, of un-matched integrity, happiest students and staff, in the city!

5. Students Come First! - Because DSC students are actually enrolled members of the studio, it is easy maintain a commitment to them and their learning above all else. At any given moment, a DanceSport Carolina instructor knows how many students they are responsible for, where their students are in the curriculum, and what amount of time (outside of teaching hours) they therefore need to be dedicating to lesson prep, choreography, and otherwise. DSC is able to make adjustments to their staffing, group class availability, open-floor times, and otherwise, based on their students specific goals and needs. As an enrolled student of DSC, decision are actually being made based on YOUR specific needs, goals, and journey! How incredible is that?! The focus of DanceSport Carolina and its entire team is to help and allow YOU to shine and to make the most of your dance journey. Our teachers do not consider students a mere means by which to further their own careers, rather, their careers a means by which to further enhance the lives of their students!

"If just ANYONE could be part of it, would you really want to be?"

Class and Character

DanceSport Carolina's Elizabeth just published an article for planetballroom.com on keeping focused on the positive during the competition preparation process. Here at DSC, while we value good dancing, intense training, and dedication; above all, we value sportsmanship, conduct, and experiencing life's joy's through dance. We have always taken pride in the fact that we walk away from events not only laden with trophies, plaques, and medals, but with other studio owners, judges and pro's endless praise on the spririt of our school. While we can't put the ladder in our front lobby, make not mistake that it matters to us more than any prize ever could. We are firm believers that this spirit and code of conduct comes from the top down. From Thomas and Elizabeth's early days in the industry, to the way their staff is trained, and therefore, trains their students, there are two common trends: class and character. They were Tom and Elizabeth's legacy before DSC, and are as much a part of DSC's foundation as the bricks and mortar in which we dance! With that in mind, we wanted to share Elizabeth's blog article for planetballroom.com with you all, as a way of reminding you to focus on the positive in this crazy and exciting time of preparation. We'll see you at the Ritz!

Why We Dance....

DanceSport Carolina is the SouthEast's only EXCLUSIVE and premier Ballroom and Latin dance training facility. Whether you are looking for a Who's Who's among national champions, or simply to be the best one on the floor of your next company Christmas party, DanceSport Carolina offers the curriculm, teaching system, and staff to accomplish your wildest (or tamest!) dancing dreams. But so often, we forget WHY we dance...what brought us to the floor to begin with.

If you are a couple, most likely your reasons center around passion (or lack thereof), boredom (yes, it happens, its okay!), the search for a date-night that doesn't involve your feet sticking to the floor, and the desire to truly invest in your significant other and your relationship. Where else can you take to the floor, wrapped in one another's arms, cloaked in darkness and dusted with glistening spotlight, while sensuous beats take you far, far away? Where else can you laugh, really laugh, both with and at one another? Where else can you grow together, both emotionally and physically, while learning to do something new? It's on the dancefloor.

If you are a single (either in life, of just in dance) most likely your reasons to dance center around the desire to REALLY show yourself and others what you are made of! To attain an air of grace, confidence, and success that follows you off the floor and into your everyday life. To challenge yourself, your VIEW of yourself, and others view of you. To be something you always wanted to be, but never thought you could. All this and more, happens on our floor.

No matter how you come to our studio, as a pair, as a single, straight from work, or in between running your children around town, one thing remains the same: you leave a different person than you walked in. Maybe happier, with the flush of excitement and physical exertion on your cheeks. Perhaps prouder, of yourself, your spouse, or a move that you finally mastered. Maybe even a bit more in love, having had an uninterrupted hour to spend focusing on your special other. You are not only different, but better. This truth is the heart of each and every passing hour at DanceSport Carolina. Through growing staff and adding studios, that focus and vision has remained the same. Every lantern hung was with the though of someone dancing under it, and every teacher hired with the dream of sharing DanceSport Carolina's passion with the world. This truth is our heart, and it is WHY WE DANCE.

How Do You Spend YOUR Friday Nights?

Remember the day when Friday night meant something good, something fun, something exciting? Maybe a homecoming dance, or football game, a night at the club, or some frat party with a friend? We all hit a point where those things are no longer a part of our life or social calendar (thank God, really!), but the strange part is, SO FEW people actually make an effort to fill that void with something that is equally or even more exciting. Something that is productive and constructive, something that gets your heart rate climbing, something that gives you a reason to buy that cute little dress or skirt! If you are part of Charlotte's ONLY exclusive Ballroom and Latin dance studios, DanceSport Carolina, you know the feeling! Your Friday nights once again hold all the thrill and excitement, romance and passion that they did in years past! EVERY Friday night one of DanceSport Carolina's studios is turned into a swanky and sophisticated PRIVATE NIGHT CLUB for its students and staff only! The evening kicks off with an hour long group class that runs directly into an hour of non-stop music and dancing! The lights go down, the passion and excitement climbs; the disco ball gets cranking and the bass explodes! Whether you are there to dance with your special someone, to mix and mingle with our extra-ordingary amateurs, or to enjoy the roller-coaster excitement of dancing with our DSC Pros, the evening is sure to be the highlight of your week! New to dancing and overwhelmed at the thought of being able to handle the crowd? Our staff is there to hold your hand through what is guaranteed to be the first of MANY Friday nights spent with us. There is no better way to gain confidence and comfort on the dance floor than trying you new moves in a real-life environment!
So join us this and every Friday night at your local DanceSport Carolina, and put a little SPICE back in YOUR life!

Photos from Lizzie's Latin Birthday Bash!

Be honest, you SO wish your life was this much fun!

DanceSport Carolina Pros Bring the Heat!

If you have attended any of DanceSport Carolina's events in the past, the overwhelming success of Lizzie's Latin Birthday Bash will come as no suprise! Students from both the Lake Wylie and Matthews locations flooded DSC Matthews just before 8pm and danced NON-STOP until 10pm. There was not a dry face or shirt in the house! (as evidenced by the photos!) The evening kicked-off with a latin line dance and the temperature rose from there! The floor and walls vibrated with energy, joy, and Tom's ridiculous bass system! In between dances, students snacked on festive appetizers and desserts brought by their fellow dancers. Students honored Elizabeth with a beautiful (and absolutely delicious!) custom-made, designer birthday cake and wonderful gifts. The highlight of the evening was the Professional Mambo formation danced by DSC's very own Matthews staff. Even Elizabeth was caught gasping and squealing in delight!
For more photos from the event, visit our DSC facebook page: www.facebook.com/dancesportcarolina
Up next on the DSC event calendar: The Cosmopolitan Classic! Sunday, September 26th at the Ritz-Carlton hotel! There are still tickets available for our day and evening sessions, and a very limited number available for the Ball. Email Elizabeth or speak with your teacher for ticket information. Here at DanceSport Carolina, we like to keep things fresh, spicy, and full of flavor! Whether it's the chacha, rumba, or....SALSA! In honor of our committment to such an environment, we have decided to host a salsa competition at Lizzie's Latin Birthday Bash, Friday, July 23rd. Big Band in the Big Easy!

Elegance, sophistication and glamor were in abundance at DanceSport Carolina's first annual "Big Band in the Big Easy" swing/Mardi-Gras party! Fishnets, fringe, tommy-guns, and boas mingled a professionally set Mardi-Gras ballroom. A live, 6-piece swing band pounded out Lindy Hops, Jitterbugs, Foxtrots, Waltzes, Rumbas, East Coast Swings, West Coast Swings, and more all night and the students shook, shimmied, and danced all night long! A black-tie catering company served New Orleans inspired dishes like jumbalaya, cajun shrimp, hush puppies and more! Like everything DanceSport Carolina does, it was first-class, elegant, sophisticated, and classy. Our reputation as the ONLY EXCLUSIVE dance studio of the Carolinas remains uncontested!

Students danced until their feet ached, and then danced some more! The Garver's won the costume contest for their unique 20's ensemble and recieved a $100 gift certificate to their next DanceSport Carolina event!! They have many to choose from: the "Southern Paradise Ball", our "Sizzlin' Salsa" party in July, or our "Waltzing in a Winter Wonderland" Ball and Showcase. The fun and excitement never stops at DanceSport Carolina! And each event outdoes the one before! You don't want to miss a single one!
